The institute was founded in 1987 by Dr. George D. Kofinas as a private independent center dedicated to provide advanced reproductive treatments (reproductive surgery and IVF) to the couples with infertility in Brooklyn and Staten Island.

The institute was located at the Brooklyn Hospital Center where Dr. Kofinas served as the Chief of the Section of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility and Chairman and residency program director of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. At the time of its establishment, the institute was the only center of its kind in Brooklyn and one of the three major centers in the metropolitan New York area offering to its patients advanced reproductive surgery (microsurgery laser laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery) assisted reproductive technologies (IVF, GIFT) and laboratory services for the diagnosis and treatment of infertility.

The Fertility Institute has been a pioneer of advanced infertility treatments in Brooklyn with several firsts including:

  • Performing the first in-vitro fertilization procedure and birth in Brooklyn.
  • Achieving the first successful gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT) birth in Brooklyn.
  • Achieving the first successful ICSI birth in Brooklyn.
  • Performing the first assisted hatching procedure and birth in Brooklyn.
  • Established the first cryopreservation (Frozen Embryo) program and birth from frozen embryos in Brooklyn.
  • Established the first egg donation program and birth from donated eggs in Brooklyn.

Dr. Kofinas superior surgical skills, his unparalleled clinical expertise and his relentless pursuit of excellence have secured the reputation of the Fertility Institute as one of the best fertility centers in the country.

The unprecedented success of the Fertility Institute, its continuous growth, new technological advances and an ever-growing number of patients seeking treatment at the Fertility Institute made it necessary that the Fertility Institute relocate at a new facility. Taking into consideration the growing needs of our patients, and after careful evaluation of numerous factors that can have a positive impact on the quality of care offered to our patients Dr. Kofinas and his associates selected The New York Methodist Hospital as the new home for the institute.

In November of the year 2000 the institute relocated at a brand new state of the art facility on the fourth floor of the Kirkwood Pavilion at the New York Methodist Hospital, where ultramodern laboratories, operating rooms and spacious warm and welcoming offices are located.

The Fertility Institute delivers management excellence, a commitment to success and the resources and experience to develop effective treatment plans to address our patients needs. This approach under the guidance of the founder and director Dr. George D. Kofinas has been the foundation of the institute’s success since its beginning in 1987.

The Institute’s most unique assets are the talents, energy expertise and compassionate care of its staff.

The Fertility Institute exists because we genuinely care about the infertile couple. We understand the frustration, the emotional stress, and the desperation of couples who yearn for a child of their own. Our staff is warm, caring and sympathetic to our patients needs. The focus of our care is designed with the needs and personal requirements of our patients in mind. We are committed to four principles:

  • Personal Attention: The patients are our first priority in all we do. We treat each patient as an individual, working with them one-on-one throughout each stage of their treatment.
  • Quality Care: Our center is equipped with the most advanced technology available. We offer our patients the advantages of comprehensive diagnosis, treatment, and state-of-the-art services in one facility.
  • Convenience: Our doctors and staff are dedicated to being there when our patients need their help. In our personal commitment to each patient, we offer the convenience of flexible hours and staff availability seven days a week.
  • Affordable Care: We are dedicated to keeping the costs of our services affordable to those who need our help. In this aim, we offer a variety of payment options to work with individual budgets.
